The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon [BookCrossing]
It was definitely time to get back to Jamie and Claire and their life together. Once again, I'm amazed at just how much these people can go through, good and bad times. But I can say that as long as the book was and as long as it took me to read, I was never bored and I enjoyed the time I spent with these characters. [1/18/10]
Frostbitten by Kelley Armstrong
Although there was a lot of action in this book and Elena's character dealt with some issues from her past, it felt a little flat compared to the other books in the series. I still enjoyed it quite a lot, but the other Elena books are much better, in my opinion. [2/6/10]
A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon [BookCrossing]
I was going to wait a while before reading this book since it took me so long to get through the previous book, but I just couldn't stop myself. And I feel like I just flew through this book and it took me no time at all to read. I jut couldn't keep myself from picking it up and reading more. Very compelling and with a bittersweet ending. Thank goodness the next book is available! [2/10/10]
Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon
Holy cliffhangers, Batman! So many storylines ending on a precarious note. I can't believe I'm going to have to wait to find out what happens next. For the most part, I enjoyed all the plotlines in the book although I found myself reading quickly through the William sections because I just wasn't as interested in those (although the way he was left might make him a more interesting character in the next book). But now what do I do until the next book comes out? [3/10/10]
Demon Ex Machina by Julie Kenner
After reading several rather lengthy books, I needed something lighter so I picked up this one. Of course, it's not all puppies and chocolate as there is a lot of serious business going on in this book, but it's told in a much more lighthearted manner than my previous reading, so it was a nice break. My memory was a bit fuzzy on some of the earlier action in this series, but I think I picked up the important points. And this one actually ended at a point where the series could easily continue or easily end here (i.e., no major cliffhanger, just open possibilities). [3/15/10]
Changes by Jim Butcher
So Harry always goes through quite a lot in each book and I always wonder how on earth he is able to get through it. But this book was triple what he's gone through before. Changes indeed! From the very first sentence, I was in suspense and disbelief about what Harry had to do. Where does he go from here? [4/26/10]
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
This is one of those books that I'd been meaning to read for quite some time. If I get enough students, I'll be teaching it in a class this fall. I think it'll work really well for the course and I enjoyed some of the slightly philosophical questions that were posed with the situations that Ender (as well as his brother and sister back home) found himself in. [5/26/10]
Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison
I don't know why it seemed like this book was going on forever. I really like relationship between Rachel and Trent which had some interesting dynamics going in this book. There was one moment where I cried; it was something I knew would come at some point but it was still unexpected and very sad. And although he did seem somewhat necessary to the plot, I could do without seeing Nick ever again. [5/31/10]
Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris
The set-up of the book seemed to have a lot of various plot points going on, especially some vampire politics issues. But the book only really wrapped up two of those plot points. While I think definitely some of the issues are more far-reaching than one book, sometimes they felt a little out of place in this book. Otherwise, I really liked seeing Sookie and Eric together and I look forward to seeing what happens in their relationship. It also looks like Jason is really stepping up and being a big brother to Sookie, which is nice. Some nice, though casual, Sam moments. [6/2/10]
Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn
I have really enjoyed all the Kitty book and this was no exception. Although I did miss having Ben in most of the book, the setup was great and really kept me on the edge of my seat. And Kitty has really changed so much from the submissive person that she was in the first book. She really acts like an Alpha now. [6/4/10]
The Betrayal of the Blood Lily by Lauren Willig
I'm not as fond of this book as I have been of other books in the series. It really seemed like a side adventure and the whole spy part seemed rather peripheral. There just wasn't much to it. Penelope is a fun character but the book as a whole just didn't have the same feeling as some of the previous ones. [6/10/10]
Lord of Misrule by Rachel Caine
I know that I read the previous book because I have vague memories of it but that's all - very vague memories. So it took me a little while to get back into the groove of this story. I know this isn't the greatest story ever told and I wasn't expecting that. Even so, I just didn't feel myself getting into the characters as much as I remember having done with the previous books. I don't know if that's because my own reading preferences have been changing since I started this series or if this just didn't have the same umph as the rest of the series. [6/15/10]
Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine
I still wasn't feeling it in the first half of this book. Then the second half really started to pick up and I found myself really wanting to keep reading to find out what happened. So that was good. But then there was this scene at the end (will keep it spoiler free) where Claire was in trouble again that just felt very tacked on and forced and unnecessary. I can see how it was trying to tie up a minor plot point but I didn't feel that it was really needed at all and it kind of took away from the rest of the book. [6/18/10]
Fade Out by Rachel Caine
I waited too long after finishing this book to write this review so I honestly cannot remember very much about my thoughts on the book. It obviously made a big impression on me *sarcasm*. [6/21/10]
Shift by Rachel Vincent
I thought that the whole Thunderbird part was pretty neat but the plot about the prides being in conflict didn't really move forward very much. It felt more like a setup for the next book (which the last paragraph really seemed to indicate). But still an enjoyable entry in this series. [7/2/10]
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
Doing a reread of the series...and it's just as good as I remembered. It was quite interesting to reread this first book in light of what happens in the next three books. [7/?/10]
Dragon Haven by Robin Hobb
Going into this book, I thought that I remembered reading that this was only a two-book "series" so I was surprised when I got toward the end and it seemed like there should be a lot more story. So I hope that there will actually be a third book as I really started to like these characters and want to find out more about what happens to them. [7/17/10]
Shalador's Lady by Anne Bishop
At first I wasn't as interested in the Shaladar story and mostly wanted to see what was going on with the original trilogy crew, but as the book went on, I got more and more interested in these new characters (yes, I did read the previous book with those characters and felt the same way with that book). So it was a very enjoyable book. [7/25/10]
Sweater Quest by Adrienne Martini
I was expecting this to be more about knitting the sweater itself than it was. The sweater provided mostly backdrop and there was a lot of information about the knitting world which was very interesting. I did get a little tired of the author continuously asking "if I don't use the exact yarn, am I still knitting an Alice Starmore" but overall I really liked this book. [7/29/10]
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
(spoiler alert) I just finished this book. I was actually really getting into it and enjoying it and then the ending just blindsided me. In a word - the ending stunk. I felt it was there for the shock factor, for the theme of never knowing what is going to happen and never being promised tomorrow, for the tear-jerking reaction (which did indeed produce tears in me). There was no point to it. Which is probably true to life. But I like to read books to escape real life for a little while. Why do I want to read a book that is too true to life? Right now, upon just finishing the book, the ending has ruined it for me. Maybe I'll change my mind later, but at the moment, I am hating this book and author. [8/6/10]
Waking the Witch by Kelley Armstrong
I really do love this series and this book is no exception. I enjoyed getting to know Savannah better and although I suspected some of the murder mystery solutions, the story did keep me on my feet and didn't allow me to completely guess everything before it was revealed. But I have to admit that it's the ending that's really got me excited...and now I have to wait for a future book to find out what's going to happen! [8/15/10]
Vanished by Kat Richardson (audiobook)
I don't remember some of the details of the earlier books so I think there were parts that I didn't quite grasp, but overall I really enjoyed this book and will look forward to reading more. [8/20/10]
Tales of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong (audiobook)
I think my favorite story from this collection was the one that showed how Clay and Elena met. I wasn't expecting to like the Eve story as much since I liked her book least, but seeing how she and Kristof met and what happened at the end made me really like and respect Eve a lot more. And I got quite a bit of Lucas and Paige, whom I've been missing in the later books so it was great to hear more of their story. A wonderful addition to the Otherworld universe. [8/28/10]
Passage by Connie Willis
I loved this book. Loved it. There was one event that happened to a character that I'm not super happy about (trying to keep it spoiler free), but I do completely see why it was necessary for the story. The middle section of the book actually made my pulse start to race because it was so exciting. I cried a little. Some laughter. Loved the metaphors. Just an overall excellent book. [8/29/10]
Kitty Goes to War by Carrie Vaughn
The title is a bit misleading. I was expecting Kitty to gather her pack and go into battle against another pack or some other force. Rather than that scenario, Kitty gets involved with some military werewolves and it's more about rehabilitation than battle (although there is some fighting). But that doesn't really affect the book itself, just my expectations going into it. The book was a fast read and once again I marvel at how far Kitty has come from the submissive wolf that she was in the first book. I'm very happy to see her and Ben together in this book (I missed him in the last one since she was off without him). I'm very curious to see how the situation with Cormac progresses (although I do feel that one of the plots in this book was mostly just a setup for Cormac's revelation rather than a truly integral part of the story). Probably not my favorite Kitty book, but it's a solid addition to the series. [8/31/10]
Forever Princess by Meg Cabot
*spoiler alert* In an earlier book, I was upset at Mia for breaking up with Michael and going out with JP, whom I knew was a fake. I was so right! So this book was a very fitting end to the series with Mia and Michael finally getting back together (with Mia being a bit more mature). And even though I didn't think Lilly was the greatest friend in the world, it was also good to see her and Mia start mending their friendship. [9/1/10]
Sword of Avalon by Diana Paxson (audiobook)
The book was just okay. It was an interesting idea as to how Excalibur came to be made, but I didn't feel particularly drawn to any of the characters so I didn't feel like I just had to keep reading (or listening rather) to find out what was happening to them. [9/26/10]
Sword of Truth #1: Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind
I watched the television series that was based off this book series (Legend of the Seeker) and enjoyed it quite a lot. I really like these characters so it was great to see them "again" (the first season of the show was based off this first book), even with some of the changes between book and show. Definitely a series I'll continue reading. [10/17/10]
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
I decided to reread this book so I could refresh my memory before seeing the movie. I realized that I had only read this book once, in less than 24 hours when it came out, so details were a bit fuzzy. I didn't completely finish it before seeing the movie, but it was still nice to read it around the same time and compare the two (I really enjoyed the movie). This time around, the book made a lot of sense and some of the questions I think I remember having after reading it the first time seem to have been answered. I guess I really did read it a bit too quickly that first time. [11/26/10]
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Emily read this series and told me that I had to read it, so I read the first book in a day, mostly because I couldn't put it down (and it wasn't too long). I can see why she was excited about it because I greatly enjoyed it. Both the concept as well as the storytelling/character building was intriguing. I'm eager to read the other two books! [11/28/10]
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
I forgot to come over here and write down my thoughts after reading this book so they are a little fuzzy now, 10 days later. But I do remember loving the way this book was written even while hating what was happening to the main character and immediately starting the next book. [12/5/10]
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
I quite literally couldn't put this book down. And when I did finally finish it, it took me quite a while to get "out" of the book and back to the real world because I had lived in this book so solidly for two days. I cried quite a lot at the end. Although of course a happier ending where everyone lived and was whole and perfect would have been nice, it would have been unrealistic and it would not at all have fit into the trilogy. So I think that it was actually a rather perfect ending. The only part I was upset about was _____ ’s death, but I also realize why it had to happen. And I did want Katniss and _____ together so the ending was rather bittersweet for me. [12/7/10]
