My Thoughts
"Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other path, no other way, no day but today."
Jonathan Larson, RENT
This one really speaks to me. There are so many things in life that I could regret - why did I do this? why didn't I do that. There are things that are in the past and I can't change them. To constantly dwell on them could cause me to miss what is going on around me right now, so I push the past to the past and concentrate on today - and tomorrow.
"I am a part of all that I have met."
Tennyson
Every experience, every person in your life leaves a little piece of itself or themself with you. You are a conglomeration of all of those pieces.
"When you depart from me, sorrow abides, and happiness takes his leave."
Shakespeare
I just love this. I think it's a beautiful thought.
"To be up after midnight and to go to bed then, is early."
Shakespeare
This was my philosophy in college. Not so much anymore.
"Your cause of sorrow must not be measured by his worth, for then it has no end."
Shakespeare
I think this is a perfect thought for after someone has died.
"Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody."
Mark Twain
So very, very true - even if some people don't want to admit it of themselves.
"In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart."
Anne Frank
This is such a wonderful thought, something that I try to believe, but sometimes it's just so very hard to. I only hope that someday I could say it and actually truly mean it. This one especially has a powerful meaning after the events of September 11, 2001. Will anyone ever be able to say this again and actually mean it? Is it really true?
"You will never 'find' time for anything; if you want time you must make it."
Charles Buxton
So very true. I have so many things going on in my life and if I don't sort them out and make myself do this one day and that the next then nothing gets done and everything just piles up. If something is truly important to you, you'll be able to find the time for it.
"A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step."
Lao-tzu
I try to do things one step at a time, looking at the big picture, but not letting that intimidate me into not being able to act.
"Conform and be dull."
J. Frank Dobie
If you deny yourself who you truly are, you will be a very unhappy, boring, and bored person.
"Resolve to be thyself; and know that he, who finds himself, loses his misery."
Matthew Arnold
Like the above.
"No entertainment is so cheap as reading, nor any pleasure so lasting."
Mary Wortley Montagu
Well, with the prices of books these days going up and up it seems reading is not so cheap as it was, but compared to many other hobbies and pasttimes, I think reading is probably one of the cheapest and certainly, to me at least, one of the most enjoyable.
"People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges."
Joseph F. Newton
Too true - in my own life very much.
"We are always getting ready to live, but never living."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
How many times have you said, when I do this then such and such will finally start happening. Don't always look to the future for your happiness and growth - that is a day by day process....it's the journey, not the destination that matters.
"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body."
Joseph Addison
A perfect analogy. Without reading and learning, can't you feel your brain start to turn to mush?
"The way to be nothing is to do nothing."
Nathaniel Howe
If you sit at home and stare at the wall all day, you'll never get anything done. Get up, get out, and do the things you've told yourself you are going to do.
"Keep true to the dreams of thy youth."
Johann von Schiller
Youth is a time of innocence, when we believe that anything is possible. And why is it not? What makes something impossible? Believe it will be and it just might be so.
"We have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night"
Tombstone epitaph of two amateur astronomers
Another beautiful thought that I love. Plus, the rhythm of these words is wonderful.
"Oh, earth, you're too wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it -- every, every minute?"
Thornton Wilder, Our Town
You know the saying - you don't realize what you have until it is gone. Live, love, and enjoy life. Don't live in a world where all you or those around you do is complain all day. Life is such a precious gift and you only get out of it what you put into it.
"Few pleasures, for the true reader, rival the pleasure of browsing unhurriedly among books: old books, new books, library books, other people's books, one's own books - it does not matter whose or where. Simply to be among books, glancing at one here, reading a page from one over there, enjoying them all as objects to be touched, looked at, even smelt, is a deep satisfaction. And often, very often, while browsing haphazardly, looking for nothing in particular, you pick up a volume that suddenly excites you, and you know that this one of all the others you must read. Those are great moments - and the books we come across like that are often the most memorable."
Aidan Chambers
I found this quote in the signature line of somebody on one of my mailing lists. I thought that it was just perfect and describes how I feel about books. I guess I'm a true reader.
